So, BMW has shown the new X4 and it’s exactly what everyone thought it was going to be. Then came the generic comments about the SUV coupe (SAV) style. (For the record, they’re not for me but I get the appeal) Looks are subjective but the argument that it shouldn’t be made because of its lack of utility is ridiculous.
An SAV is no different in purpose than an S65 coupe, 4 series, or late Monte Carlo. It’s a more expensive, less useful version of a more common vehicle.
We wouldn’t want a world without coupe versions of sedans or wagons, so can we please stop the ridiculous non utility argument?

So much of this segment feels like such a blatant money-grab. I know that everything could been seen that way in the right light, but SAVs always feel unauthentic for some reason. Whatever the hell that means.

I wouldn’t buy one, but they always remind me of Micro Machine proportions, so I’ve got a bit of a soft spot for them there.

I understand, they don’t have any purpose or utility other than design for designs sake. On the other hand, in a way that is their purpose. A way for people to flaunt that they value the look and striking nature of an automobile more than anything else.

Honestly, I mostly just get grumpy about the use of the word coupe for vehicles with more than 2 doors. That’s not a coupe to me. Now get off my lawn.

That’s a completely fair argument

About themost extreme argument i can think of is the Maserati CUV, (car utility veh...its a tall car. Im calling it a CUV) whatever name it has. Its a tall car, no clearance for anything but running to restaurants. I honestly drew pictures of this segment in my youth. In fact all kids under six draw them. Its a blob on wheels. My eight year old could design this type for Honda and BMW. In a way its a simpler, much sadder life for the rest of us; we immediately see their priority in life before we even talk to them. Save for the one guy who just wants to see higher and not have to park a truck.

That’s the best argument I have ever heard about them and you’re absolutely right. It definitely takes a certain type of person to drive these daily

We wouldn’t want a world without coupe versions of sedans or wagons
For the record I prefer my vehicles with 4 doors. I get having 2 doors on a dedicated sports car or something like the BMW 1M and M2 where the car is quite small to start with and having 4 doors would mean making them tiny, but I don’t understand why people want 2-door versions of ordinary sedans. They’re less practical for loading both baggage and passengers, rarely (imo) look as good as the sedan version because of the way the door and rear quarter panels get stretched, are harder to live with in tight parking lots because of the longer doors, and have no benefits to offset any of that.

People are vain I guess, form over function and the rest. It is silly. I’d buy an M3 over an M4 every day of the week, and a wagon over both if I’m honest

It is design for designs sake, and it’s a type of design (and vehicle concept) I very strongly dislike. So I’ll keep hating it with a passion.

Back when mainstream marques offered mainstream coupes, they were cheaper than their four-door platform mates and that’s why they existed. Someone who didn’t want an embarrassing Cavalier but didn’t need the utility of a Lumina could save a couple or a few hundred and buy a Monte Carlo. Coupes have been canabalized primarily by more desirable and practical compacts and subcompacts. It seems as though car buyers and manufacturers evolved in lock-step on this one, with optioned-up compacts offering significantly more profit margin than stripped-down midsize coupes.
Long story short, I’ve never not hated getting into, being in, or getting out of the backseat of a 2-door. The world really doesn’t need 2-doors with more than two seats.

X4 and X6 are pointless, X3 & X5 are useful.

If they’re cheaper I can sort of let it pass... even still I’d rather just spend the money and get a proper # of doors.

4 and 6 series are then pointless and the 3 and 5 series are useful. An X3 and X5 are even more useful than a standard 3 and 5 series so should BMW only make those because they are the most useful variants?

Proper coupes are fine
This ugly bmw x4 x6 are pointless
Sloping back on them makes them less useful
